Andrew Elliot: Geography

September 23, 2015 in Profile, SLE

I have been a qualified teacher since 2003. Prior to my teaching qualification I was a classroom assistant. It was during this time that I gained a passion for education and working with young people. After my PGCE, I worked as a teacher of SEN and Geography in a challenging urban school in Derby. I soon become Head of A Level Geography and then Head of Humanities. I am currently Head of Geography at Saddleworth School in Oldham.

Geography is the most popular GCSE option subject at Saddleworth and progress and attainment has been consistently high for a number of years.

Saddleworth has provided me with the opportunity to use my experience and expertise to provide CPD across the school. I have played a key role in developing whole school T & L and have helped improve the practice of colleagues across a number of key departments. I am a mentor for both ITT students and newly appointed Curriculum Leaders.

I encourage challenge, strong relationships, creativity and sensible risk taking within my teams. I have worked diligently to create a progressive and supportive learning culture with an ethos of collective accountability. I believe that staff development and not judgement guide colleagues to be the best that they can be.

I am passionate about metacognition and pupils taking responsibility for their entire learning journey. This has transformed pupil engagement and enjoyment at Saddleworth. I have helped develop a number of outstanding teams and individuals who have been at the forefront of superb pupil attainment and progress and incredible learning experiences.
